How To Tell If You Need Your Air Ducts Cleaned

One of the first questions we ask is “What is the age of the house?” We know that the age of the house is important information. If it is an old house we ask, “Have the air ducts ever been cleaned before?” If they say no, and the house is over 10 years old, we recommend cleaning the air ducts.

If they say it’s a new house then we ask, “Are the floor vents dirty with saw dust and/or sheet rock dust when you remove the vent covers? Do you see sheetrock dust in the blower compartment when you remove the cover plate? Do you see much white dust on the house surfaces?” If the potential customer says ‘yes’ to one or more of these then we suggest duct cleaning to remove construction debris. The same holds true for houses that have recently been remodeled.

Another question we ask is, “What do the cold air return vent covers look like?” If they are showing a lot of dust build up, we recommend they take the dirtiest one off and hold their cell phone in the opening and take a picture. If the cavity is clean then we suggest they clean the vent covers. If the cavity is dirty we suggest they have the ducts cleaned.

We will ask, “Do you have pets?” If they have pets and the house has some age, or if their family members have asthma or allergies, we suggest duct cleaning if the asthma and allergies are constantly causing them grief.

Also, “What does the filter look like when you change it and how often do you change it?” If they are changing their filter every month or two and it’s really dirty, we suggest getting the air ducts cleaned. When it comes to the dust, potential customers need to realize that air duct cleaning will not rid the house completely of dust. Every time the doors or windows are opened, dust can come in. Also, houses with carpets will hold the dust. No matter how often they vac the carpet, they can’t remove all the dust.
